In His Own Words.....2
"Tragically,
he (Oscar) has the potential to live the
fullest but is pulled back by guilt."
January Aus.Vogue 1998, Cobbert
(When
asked if he was content) "But contentment?
I guess so..?,then maybe I don't want to feel contentment."
January Aus. Vogue 1998, Cobbert
"Yes, I
suppose I am.(a romantic) But I like hard-hitting romance, like
in real romantic poetry. Actually the romantic poets were tough.
Someone like Byron, for example, was very cynical in his
romanticism. I'm quite drawn to that."

"It's a
strange thing for an actor who just wants to act," he says.
"All this attention. I want to support the things I do, and
I am happy to support them...the financiers and the producers
want you to do that as well. But talking about yourself is a long
way from acting, which is really what I want to do."
Australian
Vogue, March 1998 Hogan
'He talks of
poets such as Byron (carried off by malaria) in Greece), Shelley
(drowned in Italy), Pushkin (dead in duel) and the war poet
Rupert Brook and Keith Douglas, "Maybe the price of their
vision is death," he muses.'
Australian Vogue, March 1998 Hogan
"There is something in Oscar I feel an empathy for," he says. "It is something to do with faith and guilt and conscience, with the struggle between spiritual aspiration and the recognition of the pleasures of being alive. There are things that are pleasurable that society says are not allowed. But at what point does pleasure in life become indulgence, a negative thing, an anti-spiritual force?"
"I think
Ocar is easily misunderstood. He might be seen as weak but
there's actually a very strong core to him which Lucinda
recognizes. He is very independent and he has this complete
openness to other people. He will always see the good in someone
before he discovers the negative."
Oscar and Lucinda, Production
