National's Freudian drama sees its cast shrink again

How many actors does it take to play Sigmund Freud? In the case of the National Theatre, the answer is at least four.

In the latest setback for the National's production of the new Christopher Hampton play The Talking Cure, the Scottish actor Bill Paterson said yesterday that he felt he could no longer play Freud.

His withdrawal came 24 hours after he had agreed to take the part.

Hampton's play, about a key moment in the history of psychoanalysis when Freud and Carl Jung split, opened for previews last week with James Hazeldene as Freud and Ralph Fiennes, making a rare appearance at the National, playing Jung.

But Hazeldene, a former star of the television series London's Burning, was taken ill on Tuesday and is in hospital.

For two nights Dominic Rowan, who plays one of Jung's patients, agreed to play the role of Freud as well, reading the doctor's lines from a book. However, the official first night with critics on Thursday was cancelled.

Paterson, who recently starred in the film Crush opposite Hollywood actress Andie McDowell, agreed on Thursday to go into immediate rehearsals as a permanent replacement for Hazeldene. But by yesterday he had pulled out and Rowan will carry on playing two roles until another replacement it found.

"It's bedlam backstage," one insider told the Daily Telegraph yesterday. "They're looking though all the casting books hoping to find a middle-aged actor who hasn't signed up to a panto for Christmas."

The National said yesterday: "Bill Paterson did agree to it. But when he'd had 24 hours to let it sink in, he thought that with his other commitments, he couldn't do it after all.

"We are hopeful of finding another Freud quite soon."

09/27/02 News Roundup

Thanks to Mickey on the forum for finding this piece:

UK Daily Mail piece
"Ralph Fiennes and director Adrian Noble, who have been visiting fjords in Norway to help them understand Henrik Ibsen's powerful work Brand. The play, which began as a poem is likely to be staged by the RSC at the Swan Theatre in Stratford next year.
Brand is a pries on a God-given mission that pits him against society and nature. Ibsen was inspired by the wondrous landscape of fjords and in turn, Fiennes and Noble hope their trip will inform next year's productio. When he returns from Norway, Fiennes goes into rehearsal on October 21 with director Howard Davies for Christopher Hampton's new play 'The Talking Cure, which is about Jung and Frued. Fiennes also appears with Anthony Hopkins, Emily Watson and Edward Norton in the Hannibal Lecter film Red Dragon. It opens here on October 11".

08/23/02 News- the latest and greatest

The Talking Cure will be Brief

Ralph will be performing in The Talking Cure only during the month of December. Here are the details posted by fans on the forum. Thanks to Freya for posting this info:

"Post/fax booking is likely to start during the week of 25 September (they always have a couple of weeks of post/fax booking before phone booking starts).

Phone booking is due to start on 7 October. Internet booking generally starts at the same time, although the NT website does make the point that phone booking gives you a wider choice of seats.

However, he DID say that they expected the play to book up extremely quickly, and that only people on the priority list could be sure of getting tickets. Now, a lot of places always try to join you up to these lists, but the National isn't like that - I think he was being entirely genuine.

Joining the priority list costs £10. He gave me the number for the department to call, and it is 020 7452 3500 (but they aren't open on the weekends).

He said that anyone ringing up to join should ask for confirmation that they will be included on the list for the Talking Cure priority tickets (as it is so close to being mailed out).

The fax number for the National is 020 7452 3030.

Their website at
http://www.nt-online.org/home.html
has a printable copy of the booking form for when the time comes ;-) "

Girl With A Pearl Earring Not in Ralph's Future

According to Ralph's rep, the Girl ...Earring project conflicted with his play rehearsal schedule. News reports since then have Colin Firth listed as the lead player.

Next Play will be Brand

After completing the Talking Cure, Ralph will tackle the Ibsen play Brand. Nothing is set in concrete yet for Brand except that Ralph's agreed to do it, and Adrian Nobel will direct. It should follow soon after the Talking Cure.

Magazine Alert

Ralph has a nice interview in the September "W" magazine, along with a fashion layout. He is also featured with Edward Norton in this month's Esquire mag. Yet another appearance is in the August 26 People magazine, where he is featured kissing FA, and quoted about not wanting kids.

03/01/02 News Round Up

News Round up

Thanks to Mickey on the forum for posting this Daily Mail article which is kind of a catchall on what Ralph's possibly up to this year. I'm working on definitive confirmations of the Lopez film, possible
Oscar attendance (since RF will be in LA until the beginning of April), and trying to find out if the play in December is a definite Yes. We can only hope for all of them:-)

There is another article afterward found on Yahoo, concerning the
Lopez movie.

Regarding "Spider", it is set to premiere at the Cannes Film Festival
this year.

Reports say that "Red Dragon" will premiere in November (ugghhh won't
it be competing with Bond and Harry Potter?)

If we're lucky, it will be a very nice Christmas for fans of Ralph
Fiennes!

'You've gotta do it while you're Jung.... -Daily Mail

Ralph Fiennes has agreed to star in a steamy play at the National Theatre, in a season already chock-a-block with major stars. Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Maggie Smith along with Judi Dench- along
with Madonna - are all doing London stage work this year. Actors love the theatre but the pay's not so good in non-West End venues.

Fiennes will do two big Hollywood films to pay for his forays on the stage. He's already playing a brutal killer known as the Tooth Fairy in thriller Red Dragon, starring alongside Anthony Hopkins (as
Hannibal 'the cannibal' Lecter). Then he'll do a romance with screen siren Jennifer Lopez.

On stage at the National, Fiennes will portray psychotherapist Carl Jung in a new play by Christopher Hampton called the Talking Cure. Its about about how Jung used methods he learned from Freud to help a
distressed young woman.

Hampton's play will show how Freud and Jung related to each other; for example, they once spent 13 hours analysing each other's dreams. But the pair sometimes got up to hanky-panky with patients. Its's not
a whitewash about Jung. He had affairs and he had sex - and this will be shown on stage, an associate connected to the production told me. Howard Davies will stage the play in the National's Cottesloe auditorium in December. After that, Fiennes hopes to star in Brandt for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Fiennes calls for 'Chambermaid'
Thu Feb 28, 3:16 AM ET

By Zorianna Kit

LOS ANGELES (The Hollywood Reporter) --- Ralph Fiennes will star as the male lead opposite Jennifer Lopez in Revolution Studios' "Chambermaid" for director Wayne Wang. The project will go
into production at the end of April for a Christmas 2002 release.

"Chambermaid," a Cinderella tale set in New York, follows a woman (Lopez) who takes a job as a chambermaid in a luxury hotel. She meets and falls in love with a handsome, debonair heir to an American political dynasty (Fiennes) who is staying there. The man mistakes her for a society woman, and she soon finds herself gaining insight into the life of a man she might otherwise have judged from a distance. When her real identity is revealed, however, the truth sets in about the disparity of their lives.

John Hughes wrote the original draft of the screenplay, which is being produced by Revolution-based Shoelace Prods. Revolution partner Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas is overseeing.

Fiennes, repped by CAA, is currently shooting Universal Pictures' "Red Dragon." He next stars in David Cronenberg's feature "Spider" and Neil Jordan's "Double Down." Fiennes is a double Academy Award nominee for his work in "Schindler's List" and "The English Patient." Other credits include "Sunshine" and "The End of the Affair."
